The in at Little Bend by Bobbie Groover

A DAZZLING BEAUTY…
In antebellum America, life for an abandoned woman was difficult at best. But when young Grayson escapes her sadistic guardian, she finds freedom just as hostile. The lonesome, starving wanderer flees straight into the path of vicious marauders. Only one thing keeps the rustlers from violating the curvaceous, dark-haired beauty but the punishment they intend to mete out for her crimes borders on insanity.
A SURLY COWBOY…
Not far away a lone rover hears the screams, yet continues down the road. He wants nothing more of life than to be left alone. He has his own debts to account for. Once a headstrong irresistible rakehell, he had bolted, shuttered his heart and retreated deep within himself. But now the wafting agony tears at him. Swearing under his breath, he whirls the horse around.
A SIMPLE INN…
Grayson Ridge struggles to survive and conceal the secrets that plague her while they stay at the inn at Little Bend. Her exploits collide with the life of Drake Somerset. Neither realizes their chance encounter could free them both. Their wrangling ignites a turbulent journey and sets their worlds on fire.

What a ride!  The Inn at Little Bend is an incredible page burner.  I couldn’t put it down.  Grayson Ridge’s strength and courage in the face of overwhelming odds far surpasses that of Scarlet O’Hara in this book that takes place in Antebellum America, and she’s a much more likeable character.  Where Scarlet pouts and flounces, Grayson pitches in and does what needs to be done from trying to cook (never having had a mother to teach her), to chopping wood and repairing a roof.  Her most difficult task is blending into plantation society, but she even manages that with aplomb.  No, actually, Drake Somerset is her most difficult task.  And you’ll have to read the book to find out whether she’s able to manage him.

You’ll notice I always include the publisher’s buy link.  That’s because authors usually receive 40% of the book price from the publisher.  Editors and cover artists usually receive about 5%.  When you buy a book from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or another third-party vendor, they take a hefty cut and the author, editors and cover artists receive their cuts from what is left.  So, if a book costs $5.99 at E-Book Publisher.com and you buy from there, the author will receive about $2.40.  If you buy the book at Amazon, the author will receive about $0.83.

Downloading the file from your computer to your Kindle is as easy as transferring any file from your computer to a USB flash drive.  Plug the USB end of your chord into a USB port on your computer and simply move the file from your “Downloads” box to your Kindle/Documents/Books directory.  I actually download my books using “Save As” to a “Books” file on my computer that’s sorted by my publisher, friends, and books “to review,” and then transfer them to my Kindle from there.  That way, if there’s a glitch with my Kindle, the books are on my computer.  Your author will be happy you did when he/she sees his/her royalty statement.

Death Runs in the Family by Heather Haven

Lee Alvarez’ ex-husband, Nick—a man she divorced with joy in her heart and a gun in her hand—sprints back in her life only to disappear again. She’d love to leave it at that, but could he be responsible for the recent death of her cousin, who keeled over at the finish line of a half-marathon in front of hundreds of spectators? As PI for the family-run business, Discretionary Inquiries, Lee follows the clues to Vegas, where she joins forces with Shoshone PI, Flint Tall Trees. Together they uncover a multi-million dollar betting syndicate, a tacky lounge lizard act, and a list of past but very dead runners, plus future ones to be offed. At the top of the ‘future’ list is the love of her life, Gurn Hanson. Hoping to force the culprits out in the open, Gurn and Lee’s brother, Richard, plan to run San Francisco’s famous Palace to Palace 12K in only a few days. Lee aims to keep the two men she loves from hitting the finish line the way her cousin did—not in a dead heat, but just plain dead! With more at stake than she ever dreamed possible, Lee is in a battle against time to stop the Alvarez Family’s race with death.

Okay, I’m prejudiced.  This is the third book in the Alvarez Family Murder Mystery series and the first two were five-star, kick derriere page-burning, hold-your-breath reads.  I’ve been waiting for this book the way I waited for the next Jim Butcher Harry Dresden book, or the next Harry Potter, or Mary Janice Davidson’s next Undead book, etc.  I had no doubt Death Runs in the Family would be just as good as its predecessors, nor did my cats, Acey and Tinkerbelle (who are fans of Rum Tum Tugger, Lee Alvarez’s cat).  Ms. Haven (and Tugger) did not disappoint any of us.  In fact you (and your cats) should see Tugger in this one!  Not sayin’ anymore, other than to tell you this is an absolute MUST READ!

You don't have to have read the first two books to enjoy this one, but you'll want more of this warm, loving, funny, crime-fighting family's nail-biting adventures.

Okay, Acey!  Of course I’ll let you have your turn.

Tugger!  Dude!  I guess you don’t need any more advice from me.  That was some fancy paw work there in this book.  You really got in there and saved the day.  Your human, Lee, was ready to go to the ends of the Earth for you, but you did pretty well for her, too.  I’d salute you if I could stand on my hind legs and raise my paw that way.  I guess I’ll just rub my scent on the corner of Rochelle’s computer before I walk off the keyboard and give you a tail flick.  Oh, she’s setting out some catnip.  Guess she has more work to do.  Me-ann, she has her shoes on, and that stupid alarm’s going off.  She must be going somewhere.  Maybe I can sneak out and go play at the auto museum when she opens the door.  Bye Tugger.  Keep up the good work.  Oh, hey, Tinkerbelle says hi.  She’s sticking her whole butt up in the air and mrowling.  Shameless tabby.  I thought Rochelle got her fixed.  Women!

Acey walked away from the computer, so I guess I can add a quick note. Liana (Lee) Alvarez is still the featured guest on my other blog.  Hop next door and meet her. Here's the link. Rochelle Weber, Author  Tink and Acey are over there saying hi, as well.

See Me by Pauline Allan

Abigail Swanson’s spirit has been battered, her body left for dead, only to recover to find fear and loneliness. Due to an abusive relationship, she is unable to feel the one thing she longs to have again. She builds a lucrative business specializing in the commodity she can’t afford to experience. Passion.

Sean Drennan traded his fists for a portfolio, but the cost was too great. Now considered damaged goods, he’s unable to find employment. Desperate to gather some quick cash, he reluctantly agrees to take a job in the field guaranteed to make him sell his soul.

So what does a successful pornography entrepreneur do when her clients are demanding a tattooed hunk and her performers don’t fit the bill? She puts all her trust in an ex-con who has nothing to lose. For one voluptuous, scared woman it’s love at all costs. For one man it’s a new experience he’s more than willing to fight his way into. Can he save her business and her heart at the same time or will his fighting ways leave him cold and lonely yet again?

What the blurb doesn’t tell you is that Abigail has built a wall around more than her heart; she’s built a wall around her body.  She’s not a perfect size four.  She would be described as zaftig or Reubenesque, and yet she finds hot sex and, well…you’ll have to read the book.

It’s one that will make you cheer for Abigail who hopes Sean will see beyond the fat, and the scars. At the same time, you'll cheer for Sean who hopes Abigail will see beyond his past to the real person inside—the person we all want our partner to see, to know, and to love.  Have the tissues ready.  Ms. Allan will definitely move you to tears.

Angela’s Coven by Bruce Jenvey

Reggie Sinclair is an aging British rock star living in New York City who has just found out he is terminally ill.  He also has a very dark secret: When he was still an undiscovered teenager, he sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for his great fame and success.  As his life draws to an end, he prepares to face the inevitable until he stumbles upon a very enchanting, modern-day witch named Angela, and her untraditional coven.

Angela gradually introduces Reggie to her world of old school Witchcraft with its roots in alchemy and ‘natural chemistry’ dating to the Dark Ages. As their relationship grows, they devise a plan to break Reggie’s contract and save his soul.

This is a story of the struggle between good and evil with a cast of characters that ranges from guardian angels to young witches-in-training. Together, they have to come to terms with the uncertainties of love, loss, and life decisions to save Reggie from an unbearable eternity. Here is a plot filled with unexpected twists and surprises to the very last page that will also cast an entirely different light on anything you may have ever considered as faith!

Angela’s Coven will have you laughing, crying and biting your nails.  You do not want to have anything in your mouth when they arrive at Cabbottown and discuss the uses of spider poop.  Mr. Jenvey, you bad, bad boy!  You’re making us real witches look bad.  I’m sure you know what we really use it for…

There were plot twists that knocked me for a loop and then made me think, Why didn’t I see that coming?  Some of them had me yelling at the book and my kids and grandkids were poking their heads in my room to see what I was so excited about.

You really do have to meet these delightful witches and this poor, confused, overwhelmed rock star and join them in their struggle to save his soul.  You won’t be able to put it down!

Dark Heirloom by J.D. Brown

“You’re a vampire” is so not what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in a cryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like why she’s able to see in the dark and walk through solid objects. What she doesn’t understand is why the other vampires expect her to have all the answers. It’s their fault she turned into one of them…right?

Jalmari’s hatred for his old-man intensifies when he’s ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their castle. He has a clan to run; there’s no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to take out the catalyst, Ema Marx. Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the clan’s only savior.

The race to figure out her vampiric origins is on. And maybe she’ll get the hang of the blood-drinking gig along the way…

I really enjoyed this book and I would have given it five roses, but it has a cliff-hanger ending.  In order to find out what happens to Ema, I have to wait for the next book!  Please don’t do this to me, Ms. Brown!  You had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and now…  Hurry up and write faster.  I really recommend this book if you have the patience to wait for Book 2.
